Viking River Cruises, Inc Complaints Better Business Bureau® Profile

Third time cruise with Viking and hands down the worst travel experience we've ever encountered, particularly for the first class price we paid. Ship generators failed, stuck in port, no A/C in many rooms and common spaces, the repairs were never fully completed aside form maneuvering after 36hrs of delay. Long bus rides and abbreviated stops due to the issue with poor to no A/C on buses. The ship even left and forgot about passengers out on a VIKING excursion at one point.

Passengers frequently overnight for one day or more in Prague before journeying by bus to meet their ships. Prague is one of a number of European cities that serve as departure and arrival points for major river cruises, but the ships do not dock there. Passengers meet at designated hotels and are bussed to their embarkation points.
The food was awful
That was a medium sized ship (roughly 500-1,000 passengers) and disembarking into town took about 2 hours, so depending on which group you were in. Also unlike many other cruises or guided tours, almost everything was included, which made it feel like a truly relaxing vacation. When asked why this is so you are are told basically " because they can". Viking Ocean cruises typically have 900 passengers.
corporate policy
We could not get another flight to New York on the 27th or the 28th on any airline. There were all kinds of problems with flights at that time. So our flight to New York and Prague did not happen. We contacted your department that deals with such problems and were told that we could get a flight from Miami to Prague for $5,000. Since we had already paid for the trip, we accepted.

I totally agree with Vikings customer service being extremely poor. Our 2020 cruise was cancelled and they just gave us a voucher that has to be used by September 2022 instead of a refund of our deposit. All of our other travels that had been booked with both Oceania, Tauck, United airlines and Austrian airlines fully refunded our money. I appreciated it so much you can be sure I will travel with them before Viking ever again even though we have enjoyed several cruises in the past. We have taken many river/ocean cruises with Viking. For over a year we have been planning a trip to Jerusalem and Egypt.
Viking offers both pre and post extensions, which are a fun way to see more of Europe and combine the best of both worlds (guided group tours with individual trips). If you want more relaxed, casual food with perhaps a table for just 2, the Aquavit upstairs is a great alternative. We had lunch a couple times there and it’s quite nice to see the river views and sit outside.
BEWARE OF FREE AIR OFFERED.
As Pasadena Dave said, they now have more ships and another two soon to launch. Wish they would bring back their cruise through the Kiel Canal. Still need to do South America when the pandemic is really over. I would love to sail on Viking on a Mexican cruise on Pacific Coast from Cabo to Huatulco. Been to all these Mexican resort areas on land vacations.

I booked a river cruise and then brought four new customers to viking with the promise of a $400 referral discount. Prior to the credit being applied I cancelled and rebooked a cruise to take advantage of lower airfare being offered to the very customer I referred - then later the referral discounts were denied. Note that the discounts had not been credited at that point which the salesperson confirmed, and the salesperson assured me they would be applied when the four entered their information. Today I was informed this had been reviewed and denied.
Another failure with Viking Air
The Silver Spirits package is $25 per person per day. Both members of your cabin have to add the package—you cannot purchase it individually. Overall, the food on the ship was far better than expected, but vegetarian options left something to be desired. Plates often felt recycled and relied heavily on creamy risotto or pasta. Manfredi’s, the Italian restaurant, had the best food for vegetarians on the ship—it certainly was not The Restaurant.
During the cruise, Viking brought guest performers aboard a couple of times, like a solo guitarist. The only staff member we didn’t love was the cruise director—he rarely engaged with guests and was often only spotted socializing with ship executives. It rubbed us the wrong way, especially because the ship’s assistant cruise director and hotel management team executives were so phenomenal.
They were used on the cruise in which travel writers were passengers. The lab was supposed to allow passengers the opportunity to participate in some clinical work. We did get an informative lecture in the lab by Dr. Roz., but not what was promised in their advertising. We didn't expect a lot of entertainment, but the Entertainment Director did not join our cruise until the next to last day. On the plus side, the staff was awesome..the food was, too, especially in the buffet area.
In other words - I brought you $15000+ worth of additional business with the promise I would receive a $400 referral credit - and You never actually gave me the credit. This was my first, and now last, Viking cruise. One of the excursions we took was completely misrepresented–fewer than half of the promised activities occurred, and those that did were sad excuses for the kinds of things one can reasonably expect. The highlight of the trip was a soggy piece of tasteless pancake with a line of whipped cream sprayed on it in front of us, which we received after waiting in the rain for 20 minutes. It was not just a waste of $400, but of one entire day of the cruise.
They had no concern or empathy for what we experienced. They should be ashamed of themselves for not giving us a credit or our money back. We have just got off the phone with Viking Air - the latest of several.
We make sure all complaints and reviews are from real people sharing genuine experiences. Jim - we had a similar experience in Akaroa (Christchurch). We were originally scheduled for Lyttleton, where we had a great private tour planned, but when they switched us to Akaroa, the 90 mins drive to Christchurch, just didn't make private tours viable. So we switched to ship tours, the included in the AM and punting on the Avon in PM. Companies can ask for reviews via automatic invitations.
